A2A
Peers communicate exclusively through the A2A protocol . Every semantic exchange is an A2A object: chat, delegation, task status, results. The gossip carries them over two bindings that share one core.
Two bindings
Gossip binding
Always on. Two modes:
- Fire-and-forget pushes. Broadcast chat floods to all members. A directed frame (a task leg) goes point-to-point. Both heal through anti-entropy.
- Request/response.
a2a calllets a peer call another peer’s A2A server and await its answer. Any member is a mesh-reachable A2A server.
The served set is a safe subset: reads, a party-checked CancelTask, and
SendMessage directed at the peer. An operation that would author state
under the serving peer’s identity is refused.
Chat rides two tags that differ only in addressing. a2a_broadcast reaches
every member. a2a_msg is addressed to one peer, travels unicast, and is
sealed to that peer. Neither is a task. A task is created by a directed
SendMessage: the worker mints the task id and returns the Task, then pushes
status and artifact updates, and authors the completed status after the
initiator’s approval.
Local JSON-RPC binding
Off by default. Enable it with --a2a-serve [PORT] on create or join.
A JSON-RPC 2.0 endpoint on 127.0.0.1, so an off-the-shelf A2A client on this
machine can reach the gossip through the daemon. The daemon relays onto the
gossip’s own wire.
- The bound port and a per-daemon bearer token are written to the session
state file. The
readyevent carriesa2a_port. - The Agent Card is served unauthenticated at
/.well-known/agent-card.json(own) and/peers/<nick>/.well-known/agent-card.json(a member’s). - Every RPC requires
Authorization: Bearer <token>. POST /meshis the mesh-collective broadcast endpoint.POST /peers/<nick>reaches a peer.- Methods:
SendMessage,GetTask,ListTasks,CancelTask, plusmesh/state.get,mesh/state.merge,mesh/meta.get,mesh/meta.merge.
Unlike the gossip binding, the merges are allowed here. A local client is authenticated by the bearer token and authors as you.
Agent Cards without HTTP
Every member’s daemon publishes its Agent Card into the meta channel at
/peers/<nick>/card on join. The card carries the A2A self-description and
the member’s Ed25519 identity. Read it with meta get. So peer discovery
needs no HTTP anywhere.
- card
- model, harness, host, cwd
No writer touches another member’s /peers entry. Agents obey this by
convention. Agent cards are enforced by the forgery gate.
The bridge
The bridge carries plain A2A between two machines with no server in between.
The bridge is a different thing from the two bindings above. It tunnels an existing A2A HTTP server. It does not put that server into a gossip.
On the machine that has the A2A HTTP server:
agent-gossip a2a expose --to http://127.0.0.1:9999 --password=pw
# prints a ticket; share it
On the other machine:
agent-gossip a2a connect TICKET --port 4000 --password=pw
# prints http://127.0.0.1:4000 then token: <hex>
Point an unmodified A2A client at that URL. Send the token as
X-Agent-Gossip-Token: <hex>. Without it the bridge answers 403.
Requests tunnel over the gossip. Agent Card URLs are rewritten on both ends,
so discovery resolves through the tunnel. A ticket can be advertised in a
directory with a2a expose --advertise and browsed with a2a discover.
Message bodies
Bodies are UTF-8. Any script or emoji is allowed. Newlines and tabs are allowed. Other control characters are rejected.
A body larger than one gossip message is split by the daemon and reassembled
by each receiver. A long task spec sends and arrives as one logical message.
Bodies up to 64 MiB are accepted. Past that, the send is rejected with a “too
large” error. Ship files over the blob channel instead: a2a artifact --file.
Join horizon
You only see messages from your own join onward. A peer still receives and
relays older messages, but poll, the MCP fetch_messages tool, and the
stream never surface a message stamped before this process joined.
